Research Center Emergency Cooling

This rapid response project helped save hundreds of long-term, temperature-sensitive experiments.

Value Delivered

EMCOR Services Team Mechanical developed a comprehensive emergency cooling plan to compensate for the 500-ton absorption chiller that failed at this private medical research center.

Our pipefitters and electricians worked around the clock to install the temporary hoses and cabling, leveraging our deep engineering expertise to calculate the required cooling and electrical loads. Even with an aggressive schedule, we placed top priority on maintaining the safety and security of building occupants and collaborated with the grounds keeping staff to avoid landscaping damage.

The temporary cooling system was able to successfully keep the facility cool 24/7 throughout the summer, preserving all experiments and research.

Client Objectives

The client needed a mechanical contractor that could act rapidly, in order to restore cooling without compromising hundreds of long-term, temperature-sensitive experiments and research.

Solutions

Because emergency cooling/heating projects often require a specific and unique set of challenges, our expertise was paramount in successfully coordinating all critical factors for this project.

During the project, we installed taps in the building system, while an emergency air-cooled chiller unit was selected, ordered, and delivered to the jobsite within hours of the failure. Temporary hoses were installed up the side of the building to the penthouse along with temporary electrical cabling from the building next door.
